In 55BC,the great Roman general Julius Caesar sailed aross the English Channel wiith 10,000 men after he had conquered Gaul(what is now France). He wanted to see if England would make a good colony. He returned the next year with a large army and defeated some of the Celts. But he had no intention of staying there, and retu to Rome before long.
About 90 years later,in 43AD,the Roman emperor Claudius invaded Britain again. In the next decades, the Romans defeated the Celtic tribes without great difficulty, and completely conquered the southern part of the island of Great Britain, including present-day England and Wales. But they were never able to completely defeat or control what is now Scotland.
The Romans made the part of island under their control a provine of their huge empire, called Britannia, rule by Roman governors. The Romans also built walls and forts across northern England to protect the province from the war like tribes of Scotland .The most famous of the walls was Hadrian's Wall, named after the Emperor Hadrian. It was built in the 120s AD and ran from olway Firth to the mouth of the River Tyne, the narrow part of the island of Great Britain.
During the Roman period, Christianity came to England.A number of things with Christian symbols on them that date from the 4th century AD have been found in various places in England.
